Open Days – Why I should Attend ?

OPEN DAYS – YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED.

Its decision time for many Year 10 & VCE students.  Careers, Courses, Accommodation, Travel and Finances are important issues you need to be discussing.  One important source of  information and motivation are the Tertiary Open Days.

Universities and TAFE Institutes are public places which are open all year round.  However, on one day each year the Universities and TAFE Institutes throw open their doors to show prospective students and general public just what goes on there.

WHAT HAPPENS ON OPEN DAY ?

On Open Day you can see a University or TAFE Institute at its best.  Everyone is there – academics / teachers, current students,  and information officers.  There are displays examples of student’s work, music, food and lots of fun.  But more importantly, you can talk with academics / teachers, other staff, and current students about what certain courses are like, and what is required in order to get in.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND AN OPEN DAY ?

Any student and their parents who are considering further education at a University or TAFE Institute.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND ?

Apart from the opportunity to obtain course information “straight from the horses mouth”, there are many other reasons why attending an Open Day is a good idea.  The local footy match or the latest assignment deadline may seem more immediate, but here are some things to think about that may change your mind.

  • If you are aiming to study somewhere for the next 3 or 4 years and spend a large sum of time and money in the process – don’t you think it is a good idea to make sure it is the right thing for you and your personal circumstances.
  • If you are going to have to move away from home, where are you going to live and how much will it cost are very important issues to investigate ?
  • What does the place “feel” like:  Is it a bustling high rise environment with lots of activity or a quieter, more relaxed campus set in landscaped grounds ?  Which will suit you most?
  • How are you going to feel on the first day of lectures, if you have never been there before?  Lost?   Alienated?    Surprised at how big the place is, or how  far it is from public transport ?
